| An Update About New Varicose Veins Treatment by Ammar Jarrous, M.D., F.A.C.S. | Comment (0) |
Recently Total Vein Systems (TVS) introduced a totally new 12-watt ThermaLite 1470nm laser. These lasers target the water in the vein wall instead of the blood component, which results in a more comfortable procedure for patients without bruising or swelling. Since these newer lasers can operate at lower energy densities, they have a fewer thermal side effects and a higher success rate.
These lasers have been getting high marks from both the physicians who use them and the patients who are treated with them.
Traditionally, laser technology uses light energy to target the lining of the blood vessels and the blood within the blood vessels. The heat generated causes a coagulation of the blood, which destroys the vein and is then absorbed by the body. Therefore, some bruises and discomfort are associated with this procedure.
Then the VNUS (Radio-Frequency) device came out. In this procedure, RF catheter is inserted into the abnormal vein and delivers radio-energy, resulting in closure of the involved vein with much less bruising than the older version laser and offering a fast return to normal activities.
In Summary, Different devices have advantages and disadvantages, Each patient is different as far as their vein anatomy and size. Therefore, having several vein closure devices available at a specialized vein clinic will give the physician as well as the patient an advantage to select the appropriate device for their vein problem based on the vein size, vein anatomy and other factors.
